Dutch artist and designer Daan Roosegaarde has created a beautiful and innovative glowing bike path that, when illuminated at night by glowing pebbles and LEDs, looks like Van Gogh’s famous Starry Night painting. The kilometer-long bike path is located in Brabant, the Dutch county where Van Gogh was born and raised.

Hairy Arms
A “term of art” is a phrase that is used to describe something in a specific industry. For example, it is perfectly reasonable to describe something as being “abaft the beam” if you’re sailing but on land we just say “it’s a little further up”. Hairy arms is a design term of art that comes out of the Disney studios and it refers to adding something you know will get edited to call attention away from the rest of the design that you want to stay as it is. Listen to this piece on NPR to get a better idea. Very clever.
Conflict Kitchen
Conflict Kitchen is a restaurant in Pittsburgh that serves the cuisine of nations we are on conflict with. It is a clever (and tasty) was to make people more aware of world politics and our place in them. This week they had to close because of death threats following the menu of Palestinian food. Read more about their project and this current controversy. Why would this “conflict” incite such measures?
DOT Art
DOT Art partners with community-based organizations and artists to present temporary public art in neighborhoods across the City. Artists help transform the city’s streets from ordinary to extraordinary with unexpected interventions – colorful murals, dynamic light projections and thought-provoking sculptures. Public plazas, fences, barriers, bridges, step streets, and sidewalks serve as canvases for art.
Check out their website to learn more about the projects and how to submit your ideas. Maybe your work can be walked on too!
